FThe IFA is currently analyzing possible amendments to the offside rule, a change championed by former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, with the aim of making football a more attacking and attractive sport in the eyes of the world.
This amendment is intended to ensure that forwards of the attacking team are not marked offside as long as part of their body is in line with the last defender, rather than with part of their body in line with the last defender, as is the case under the current regulations.

“We will continue to consider how the rules can evolve to make the game more aggressive and more engaging.”
Could this rule change also happen at the 2026 World Cup?
The answer is
no
it is still a proposal that must be analyzed by FIFA. The initiative, promoted by manager Arsne Wenger, will need approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which is responsible for safeguarding the rules of the game, before it can go ahead. IFAB will hold its annual general meeting in London on 20 January 2026.
