Nasr Bassem (27), a soccer player from Moncalara Patciense, died during the match against Immortals in the quarter-finals of the Algarve Football Association Cup.
The newspaper A Bora reported that the defender suffered a cardiac arrest at the Estadio Municipal de Olhão, losing consciousness and collapsing 27 minutes into the match (the match was not restarted).
Nasr Bassem was treated by INEM (National Institute of Emergency Medicine) paramedics who arrived about 18 minutes later.
When he arrived at Faro Hospital, they could only confirm his death.
The player said he felt sick and collapsed near Immortal’s bench.
“The player said that he felt unwell near the Immortal bench and collapsed. He was immediately rescued by our medical team (doctors and physiotherapists), resuscitative measures were carried out and a defibrillator provided at the stadium was used. Then the INEM team and an ambulance arrived,” João Andre, vice-president of Moncalapacense, said in the Record. An autopsy is expected to be performed within the next few days.
