The semi-final between England and Argentina has been classified as the highest-risk match of the World Cup after the FBI and local police discussed de-escalating the confrontation.

Wednesday night’s match between England and Argentina was classified as the “highest risk” match of the World Cup after a meeting between the FBI, officials and local police.

The FBI, FIFA and police met on Monday to discuss historic divisions between the two countries and concerns about potential escalation between supporters.

For the match at Atalanta, there will be separate gates to allow the two groups of supporters to enter, even if there is no quarantine inside the stadium. That was the tournament’s theme of fan interaction, which is partially due to the ticket resale platforms that have been utilized.

There has been a real effort to keep fans away, but there is a recognition that authorities can only do so much once fans have entered the stadium and taken their seats.

The conflict between Britain and Argentina goes far beyond football, with Argentina’s foreign minister this week declaring both countries’ claims to the Falkland Islands, a claim that was quickly rejected by Sir Keir Starmer. In 1982, 907 people lost their lives in the conflict that saw Britain reassert control following Argentina’s invasion.

Argentina’s players have consistently chanted songs that include references to the Falkland Islands after games, but Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni intended to focus purely on soccer.

“My message to the Argentine people is that this is a football match. We are playing against a great team with a great coach, but it is just a football match and nothing more,” he said.

A large number of police are stationed outside each team hotel, with a focus on monitoring the area around Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Prior to the game, Atlanta Police released the following statement: “As Atlanta prepares to host the FIFA World Cup semifinals and welcomes an increase in the number of residents and visitors, the Atlanta Police Department is strengthening public safety and security efforts across the city.

“Additional personnel and resources have already been deployed and will continue to be strategically placed in and around event venues, entertainment districts, and other high-traffic areas to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone. These proactive measures are designed to protect the public, deter criminal activity, and ensure residents and visitors can safely enjoy this historic event.”
