WWhile the world of football is embroiled in the never-ending Cristiano Ronaldo vs. Lionel Messi debate, other players continue to create historic legacies that are often overlooked in the dominance of these two icons. The truth is, what Robert Lewandowski has achieved throughout his career is nothing short of historic in world football.
Lewandowski reaches the level of Cristiano Ronaldo and two others
With FC Barcelona’s 2-4 victory over Slavia Prague in the UEFA Champions League**, the Polish striker became the fourth player in history to score at least 20 goals in the Champions League with two different clubs.
This feat puts Lewandowski alongside the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo (Real Madrid, Manchester United), Neymar (Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain) and Harry Kane (Tottenham Hotspur, Bayern Munich). These elite forwards are a select group of players who have defined an era in Europe’s top competition.
Interestingly, despite his legendary status, Lionel Messi did not reach this milestone during his time at Paris Saint-Germain.
Lewandowski also became the 39th opponent to score in the Champions League, surpassing Cristiano Ronaldo’s 38 goals and one goal behind Lionel Messi, who is the all-time leader with 40 goals. Importantly, unlike Messi and Ronaldo, who currently play in MLS and the Saudi Pro League respectively, Lewandowski continues to compete at Europe’s highest level.
Adding another layer to his incredible journey, Robert Lewandowski has reached his 1,000th career match for club and country. Ironically, however, his latest appearance also marked the first own goal of his career, scoring at both ends of the pitch while making his mark on football history.
