Roy Keane and Daniel Sturridge clash over Michael Carrick ahead of Manchester United’s home game against Liverpool. The former United captain and ex-Liverpool striker worked as a commentator for Sky Sports before Carrick’s side faced the defending Premier League champions.
With United currently secure in third place, many are starting to expect Carrick to be offered the managerial position on a permanent basis. A win for the Reds would seal their place in the Champions League, something few could have predicted when Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier this year.
Before kick-off, Sturridge and Keane had a disagreement over the idea of appointing the former midfielder in the position full-time.
But their lively discussion turned awkward when Sturridge interrupted the former Reds captain. Keane said, “They are delivering and we go back to the beginning of his era when we beat Man City and Arsenal,” and the exchange began.
“It gave the group a lot of faith and confidence and what they showed was a goal threat. They had setbacks against Newcastle and here against Leeds, but they bounced back well. So they obviously have some momentum and there’s some atmosphere within the group. But today is the next test for them.”
“As I said earlier, I think it will have a big impact on whether they can do well today and whether he gets the job or not.
“I know we shouldn’t just focus on that one game, but there’s an emotional side to it as well. If they perform well today, I think that’s a big step towards him getting the job permanently.”
“There’s a lot of PR on him, there’s a lot of push. He’s a young English coach and there’s a lot of media behind him. The people who work at Man United, the PR machine, are working hard to connect him and get him the job.”

Sturridge was confused by that last comment and interjected, asking bluntly: “Okay, Roy, what’s PR?” To which Keane curtly replied, “Do you want to finish it?” Sturridge retorted, “I keep saying PR, PR,” and the Irishman hit back again. “There’s a lot of PR for him if you let him finish.”

The tense and stinging exchange ended with Sturridge saying “I had to interject. I’m sorry” and backing away.
In contrast, Gary Neville added: “I’m on record about Michael whether he should get the job or not. What I’m saying is I’m not sure.”
“But my gut feeling before I took over was that Manchester United should appoint the best possible manager, a world-class manager with experience of working in the Champions League and winning league titles, and Michael clearly didn’t have that ability.
“He’s been at Middlesbrough and learned his trade, so I don’t think we’re on a different page than that. What I’m saying is, ‘Who’s going to be there?’ That’s the question on everyone’s mind, who’s going to take over from Michael now? What he did was to anchor the club on the pitch. ”
