Manchester United are set to receive a share of the £263.6m FIFA pot set aside for clubs supplying players for this summer’s World Cup in America, Canada and Mexico. With the tournament starting next week, United will have a huge presence as a host of players aim to make history for their countries on football’s biggest stage.
The Red Devils stand to benefit financially from their players’ participation in the World Cup. Two years ago, FIFA increased funding for club welfare programs covering tournament qualifying, subsequent play-off matches and the World Cup itself.
Under FIFA’s Club Benefits Program, clubs receive a daily payment for each player participating in a competition. Players do not need to be on the pitch to begin their payments, which start from the day they are released for international duty and run until their home country’s final of the tournament.
Last year, FIFA President Gianni Infantino said: “The enhanced FIFA Club Welfare Program for the World Cup takes it a step further by recognizing the significant financial contribution made by so many clubs and their players around the world to the staging of both the qualifying and final tournaments.”
“A record $355 million will be distributed to clubs through CBP for player releases. This will strengthen our strong working relationship with the European Club Association and clubs around the world as we all look forward to a landmark and global World Cup.”
