Lionel Messi equaled Miroslav Klose’s record of 16 World Cup goals last week, but the Argentina icon went even better with another goal against Austria.
Lionel Messi scored his 17th goal of the tournament, making him the top scorer in World Cup history. The Argentina icon scored a hat-trick against Algeria, putting him level with German legend Miroslav Klose.
But he is now even better, finding the back of the net in South America’s second group game against Austria.
The veteran eventually scored the goal, latching onto a low cross that was deflected by Rodrigo De Paul and smashing the ball past Alexander Schlager.
In fact, Messi had a golden opportunity to improve his record even before that, after Argentina were given an early penalty following a VAR review. However, he took the spot kick.
However, in the end, he scored in six consecutive World Cup games, which was also an amazing record.
Messi’s record-breaking attack came after he spoke of his ambition to reach the top of the tree. After winning the treble against Algeria, he said: “Honestly, no (I don’t care about records). It’s an honor to be there, considering what it means to be next to Klose. Ronaldo is also there, but I don’t think it means anything.”
“We have Mbappé too, he scored twice today. It’s a statistic, nothing more. It’s an honor to compete with all of them, but for me it means nothing. As far as I’ve seen, Ronaldo is one of the greatest players and he’s not number one, so it all comes down to statistics.”
Messi burst into tears after scoring his record-tying goal last week, but it was later revealed that his father, Jorge, was unwell. Messi’s family released a statement last week saying: “He is currently recovering under medical supervision and is doing well in his current condition.”
“In light of the theories, rumors and speculation that have been circulating in recent hours, the family would like to express their deep displeasure at the lack of care, respect and restraint with which some people have dealt with strictly private family matters.
“The family would also like to make it clear that only the closest family members have accurate and reliable information about Jorge’s condition. Therefore, no versions, statements or information other than those received from the family themselves or their official channels should be considered valid or true. At times like this, we ask for responsibility, prudence and compassion.”
“The health of an individual and the peace of mind of those around him should not be the subject of speculation or irresponsible media attention. We sincerely appreciate the expressions of love, respect and concern we have received and ask that the privacy, confidentiality and intimacy of Jorge and his entire family be respected during this process. All relevant updates will be promptly communicated by the family through appropriate channels.”
Messi and Argentina will conclude their World Cup group stage against Jordan.
