After more than 50 years on the air, the BBC will be broadcasting some big news on Football Focus that will surprise many fans and viewers.
The BBC has confirmed that Football Focus, which has been broadcast for more than 50 years, will be taken off the air. A statement has been released confirming that the popular Saturday afternoon football program will no longer be broadcast.
In a statement, the BBC said: “Following extensive consideration, BBC Sport has decided to bid farewell to ‘Football Focus’ at the end of this season. ‘Football Focus’, first broadcast in 1974, is a testament to the incredible team who have worked on the program over the years and, of course, to our viewers.”
“The program has been a staple of BBC football coverage for decades, providing fans with full match interviews, analysis and stories ahead of weekend matches.
“However, changes in viewer behavior mean fans are consuming football content in different ways and we need to respond appropriately as we face difficult decisions about how license fees are spent.
“As viewing habits continue to evolve, with fans accessing discussion, highlights, analysis and news through digital platforms and on-demand viewing, it’s right for BBC Sport to adapt the way it brings football coverage to the widest audience across TV, radio, online and across a wide range of social platforms.

“BBC Sport boasts a strong football rights portfolio and this year we will significantly expand our digital output, expanding our content across BBC platforms, as well as bold new plans for exclusive programming on YouTube.
“Featuring fresh formats, high-profile personalities and more frequent always-on content tailored for digital audiences, this expansion will bring fans closer to the game than ever before and deliver higher quality, more accessible and engaging soccer coverage at scale. We look forward to announcing more details on these plans in the coming months.”
“Football Focus is now led by the brilliant Alex Scott, who will continue to be a central figure in BBC Sport’s football coverage and the biggest sporting moments. Alex will play a key role across this year’s FIFA World Cup, the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup and BBC Sport’s ongoing coverage of the Women’s Super League.”
“She will also be one of this year’s hosts for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards, and further new and exciting projects with Alex will be announced in the coming months.”
BBC Director of Sport Alex Kay Jelski has released a statement as the historic show concludes, setting out the BBC’s future plans for Alex Scott. He said: “Football Focus is a hugely important program in the history of BBC Sport and has played a key role in telling the story of the game to generations of viewers.
“This decision comes ahead of the BBC’s wider savings announcement last week and reflects the continued changes in the way viewers engage with football and our commitment to evolving the way we deliver content to fans wherever they are.
“Alex Scott is one of our best presenters, hugely popular across the men’s and women’s games, and is a huge part of our present and future. She will remain at the heart of our sporting activities at both this year’s Men’s World Cup and the 2027 Women’s World Cup, as well as continuing to star in the Women’s Super League and BBC Sports Personality of the Year.”
“We’re also working on a very exciting new project with her, and we’ll be announcing more about that soon.”Regarding plans after BBC Sport’s Football Focus, it has been revealed that The Football Interview will be rescheduled to Saturdays at 12.45pm on BBC One.
The show, hosted by Kelly Summers, has already seen the likes of Bukayo Saka, Emma Hayes, Bernardo Silva, Hugo Ekitike and Michael Carrick open up about life at the top level. The Final Score with Jason Mohammad starts as early as 15:45 on BBC One, and both programs are available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
Amid major changes at the Beeb, the Telegraph reported that the BBC plans to cut up to one in 10 jobs out of its 21,500 staff over the next two years.
Scott thanked those involved with Football Focus on Instagram, saying in a video: “Two years on an iconic football show. It will forever be an honor for me to have worked on this show, it’s a show that has helped me grow as a presenter and I will always look back on it with pride.”
“Thank you to everyone who joined us on the journey. It means so much to us from the bottom of our hearts. It’s time to get excited for a big summer in sports.” Former host Dan Walker wrote of his sadness that Football Focus will end with X. “So sad to hear about the end of Football Focus.
“I’ve loved that show ever since I was a kid. I watched it every week with my dad and I remember how proud he was when I got this job. It was such an honor to sit in that chair for 12 years, work with a great team on and off the air, and form so many long-lasting friendships. Saturdays were always special. The football landscape is always changing and it’s a shame we don’t have the space to air a show that has meant so much to so many people over the years.”
