Wrexham’s Hollywood finish postponed: Ryan Reynolds’ club miss out on Premier League promotion in heartbreaking play-offs

Wrexham, who narrowly missed out on the play-offs after a dramatic result on the final day of the Championship, will have to wait at least a year before they can hope to qualify for the Premier League.

The Welsh club, owned by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, went into the decisive final round in sixth place. However, a 2-2 draw with Middlesbrough, combined with results elsewhere, meant they fell to seventh place, just two points behind Hull City, taking the final play-off place.

Despite the disappointment, Wrexham can look back on a historic campaign. Their rise in the English football pyramid has been remarkable, with three successive promotions and appearances in the Championship, establishing them as genuine title contenders.

On the final day Wrexham looked poised to maintain their place in the top six, but suffered a heartbreak near the end of the Championship table. Hull City made a breakthrough with a 2-1 win over Norwich City, thanks to a brace from Oli McBurnie.

His second goal, a 67th-minute header, appeared to come from an offside position, but the moment will be debated among supporters given its impact on the table. A draw for the Welsh side at the Riverside Stadium was no longer enough as Hull outclassed Wrexham.

Heartbreaking thoughts on the final day when all hopes of the playoffs disappeared

With the final standings confirmed, Wrexham are now just one step away from qualifying for the promotion play-offs that determine the last team to advance to the Premier League.

Hull City will face Millwall in the semi-final, while Southampton will face Middlesbrough in the semi-final. Both matches will be played over two legs, adding even more tension to an already high-stakes competition.

Wrexham’s players looked visibly disappointed when the final whistle rang, knowing just how close they had come to their fairytale breakthrough. Nevertheless, this season saw some of the strongest performances in the club’s modern history, further cementing their growing reputation in English football circles.

Their gap to the top six suggests that if they can maintain their consistency throughout a demanding Championship campaign, it won’t be long before they challenge again.

Wrexham’s story continues to garner attention far beyond Wales, with their rapid rise to power making them one of the hottest clubs in English football. This season ended in disappointment, but the gap at the top of the Championship shows how thin the line between success and disappointment is.

There is no doubt that Wrexham will aim to continue their pursuit of top-level football and come back even stronger, drawing on the experience gained from another fierce promotion battle.
