HAMBURG, Germany (AP) — Karol Metz scored his first Bundesliga goal and conceded a penalty with seven minutes remaining as St. Pauli drew 1-1 with Cologne away on Friday, missing a chance to end a six-game winning streak.
St. Pauli had some great chances, but once again suffered from some familiar mistakes in the final third, leaving them the league’s lowest scoring club.
The Mets took the lead with a header in the 69th minute. The Hamburg side were close to a vital victory to avoid relegation until the 83rd minute when Metz brought down Jakub Kaminski in the box and Luka Waldschmidt went past the goalkeeper for the penalty kick.
St. Pauli remained in third place from the bottom in the relegation play-off spot. They were two points behind Werder Bremen.
Despite this, the Hamburg club remain five points clear of penultimate Wolfsburg, who are struggling to avoid relegation for the first time since 1997.
The bottom two teams will be automatically relegated and the third club from the bottom will enter the relegation play-off.
Cologne moved up one place to 12th after striker Ragnar Aceh was sent off with a thigh injury.
