Liverpool host Crystal Palace on Wednesday night in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, a game that could give Arne Slott’s players a chance.
Freddie Woodman remains motivated and determined to write his name in the club’s history despite being Liverpool’s third-choice goalkeeper. Woodman was the least high-profile of Liverpool’s seven signings in the summer transfer window and is yet to feature for his new club.
The 28-year-old joins on a free transfer from Preston and ranks behind Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamadashvili in the goalkeeping department. However, with Alisson currently out injured and Mamadashvili acting as a substitute in the Premier League and Champions League, Woodman has his eyes set on the Carabao Cup.
Liverpool host Crystal Palace on Wednesday night in a desperately needed fourth round of the competition. With Arne Slott’s side having lost four straight in the Premier League, the Liverpool manager could be tempted to rotate his squad significantly to give opportunities to other players.
Woodman, who has previously represented Newcastle and Preston, credits Caoihin Kelleher’s development at Liverpool as an inspiration. The Republic of Ireland international starred in cup competitions with the team and left in the summer in an £18 million deal.

“Whenever I have the opportunity to put on this club’s shirt, whether it’s a pre-season game or in any competition, I’m always going to do my best and enjoy the moment, because I’ve spent a lot of time playing in the Championship, so to play for a club with such history is pretty special,” Woodman said on the club’s website.
“It’s clear that this club takes the competition seriously, as they do in any competition. When you go to Wembley in the later stages, you can see how important it is to the fans. We train in the goalkeeping area of the AXA Training Center and I regularly see the picture of Caoichhin Kelleher on the wall after his recent success in the finals, and you can see how important it is.”
“If we can win a trophy with this club, we can really write our name in history, so we know how important it is and the club knows how important this competition is.”
The third-choice goalie role is a unique one, and Woodman knows it will take an injury to get a chance. Nevertheless, he is desperate to prove himself to Slott and his new teammates.
“I’ve been playing consistently for the last five or six years, albeit a few games in the Championship and Premier League,” Woodman added. “I wanted to keep playing and I was only 28 years old, but Liverpool were mentioned in the summer. There were other options, but my father said to me, ‘How can you turn down Liverpool? You can’t do that.’
“I’m very happy with my decision because I get to work with the best players in the world and I get to work closely with the top goalkeepers, Ali and Giorgi. I think they’ll make me even better and help me develop.”
