Liverpool have lost their last four Premier League games and former striker Emile Heskey has insisted the Reds need to go back to basics to stop the rot.

Former Liverpool star Emile Heskey has urged the Reds to return to their roots to end their current slump. Having suffered four consecutive defeats against Manchester United, the Premier League’s solid defense is under threat.

The Reds are aiming to defend their title with a four-point difference from league leaders Arsenal. Liverpool have lost their last three Premier League games in the final 10 minutes, with the last two games ending heartbreakingly in stoppage time.

Arne Slott’s side need to reignite their Champions League campaign after suffering a surprise defeat to Galatasaray in their last match.

Saturday’s trip to Brentford threatens to further widen the gap in the race for the top spot in English football.

Heskey, who scored 60 goals in 223 appearances for Liverpool, believes the team needs to focus on strengthening their defense as the basis for success.

“I am very surprised by the deterioration in form,” he exclusively revealed to the ECHO via BetBrain.

“They didn’t create many chances and we were unlucky with Gakpo hitting the post a few times against United, but we’re used to Liverpool beating teams and in the build-up to these four defeats, we’ve only been winning games for more than 90 minutes, so it wasn’t convincing.

“Now they have to go back to the drawing board and go forward again and stay solid. For me, when I was at Liverpool they were solid defensively and very strong, but now they are making mistake after mistake and they are not looking very good.

“They need to go back to the drawing board, go back to basics and start playing proper defense.”

Liverpool currently sit fourth in the table, trailing Bournemouth on goal difference, but just one point behind the Gunners, who enjoy a four-point advantage over Josep Guardiola’s side.

The Reds have now lost four games in a row for the first time in 11 years, an unwanted milestone last reached under Brendan Rodgers.

However, Heskey remains reluctant to characterize his recent winning streak as a crisis, with the 47-year-old saying: “I wouldn’t say it’s a crisis, but I don’t think four years in a row is a good thing.

“Falling off their perches, leaving that role to others, they’re chasing, they’re no longer the favorites, they’re now a group chasing with others.”
