MADRID (AP) – The Spanish league is approaching regular season games in the US.
The Spanish Football Federation on Monday approved a request for a match between Villarreal and Barcelona, which will take place in Miami on December 20th.
The federation is currently seeking approval from the football governing bodies UEFA and FIFA.
The 17th match at La Liga will be held at Hard Rock Stadium.
The league was first to start a match in the US in 2018, but the idea was rejected after criticism from some players, fans and clubs. Subsequent attempts to play there also failed.
Staging matches abroad is part of the league’s goal of promoting football and its brands in other countries. The league has long-term partnerships with related sports in sports and entertainment groups that are part of Stephen Ross’ portfolio of companies such as Hard Rock Stadium, Miami Dolphins, Formula One’s Miami Grand Prix and Miami Open Tennis Tournament.
FIFA moved last year to end decades of football tradition By ordering a review of the policy that blocks domestic league matches being played in other countries.
Fans may oppose team home matches, but may travel thousands of miles (kilometers) apart, but it has become a routine for US professional sports leagues to be set in games in Europe, Asia and South America.
