Ryan Reynolds turned a famous Deadpool and Wolverine moment into a playful dig at AFC Wrexham after finding himself bombarded with a surprise football-related joke from fellow Hollywood star Paul Rudd during an appearance at Marvel Comic-Con.
The exchange came after Rob McElhenney and Wrexham co-owner Reynolds mentioned one of Marvel’s biggest unanswered jokes. In Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool witnesses Thor crying over his death, leaving fans wondering what happened behind the scenes.

When Reynolds asked Rudd why Thor was crying, Thor gave an unexpected answer that drew laughs from football fans.
“Where’s Thor? Why was he crying? He’s a Wrexham fan,” Rudd joked.
The comments were a clear sign of disappointment following Wrexham’s recent promotion push and narrowly missing out on Premier League qualification.
Since Reynolds and McElhenney completed their takeover in 2021, the Welsh club has become one of the biggest stories in football, winning promotion from the National League to the Championship in just three seasons.
However, their fairytale journey suffered a setback as Wrexham finished seventh in the Championship last season, falling just short of historic promotion.
Wrexham remain focused on Premier League dreams
Despite missing out on finishing top of the table, Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson believes his side can come back even stronger for the 2026/27 season.
“This team, if we stay together the way we are and have a good preseason, we’re going to be even stronger next year,” Parkinson said. “Of course, we always try to give ourselves even better chances on top of that.
“We know where we want to strengthen and what we need to improve. We’re going to execute on that and make this team as strong as possible for next year’s challenges.”
The club’s rapid rise continues to attract global attention and their story has become even more popular through the documentary series Welcome to Wrexham.
Their next challenge begins with yet another ambitious campaign aimed at securing further promotion and moving the club closer to Reynolds’ long-held dream of competing in the Premier League.
Reynolds achieves another major milestone in Wrexham
Before the competitive season begins, Wrexham will return to the United States for a high-profile pre-season tour including matches against Leeds United, Liverpool and Sunderland.
The match against Liverpool at Yankee Stadium is expected to be one of the biggest games in the club’s modern history, and Reynolds admitted the occasion was difficult to fathom.
“It’s not even. It’s way beyond pinching me. It’s like a punch to me moment,” Reynolds said. “So the fact that Wrexham is coming to America for the third time.
“Not only are we coming to America to play again in what is always the most exhilarating and exciting game to watch live, but it’s really great to do it with three Premier League teams in a row.”
The Hollywood owner added that playing against Liverpool at such an iconic venue represents another incredible moment in the club’s journey, adding: “Liverpool certainly couldn’t be bigger on the world stage, so we’re really looking forward to what we can do.”
Rudd’s Comic Con joke was meant to be humorous, but it highlighted Wrexham’s remarkable transformation from non-league side to one of football’s most famous clubs.
