The England international has not been given a one-year extension to his contract at Old Trafford by the club and is set to become a free transfer.
Manchester United have released a statement confirming the departures of Casemiro, Tyrell Malasia and Jadon Sancho. It was concise and to the point.
“The whole club would like to thank Casemiro, Tyrell and Jadon for their contribution to Manchester United and wish them all the best for the future.”The kindest response to that would be to point out that the scale of those contributions varies.
When they signed Sancho in the summer of 2021, they paid the club an astonishing £73m. Conservative estimates suggest he earned £60m in wages during his five years as a United player, the majority of which came from the three clubs he loaned him to: Borussia Dortmund, Chelsea and Aston Villa.
However, United have spent well over £100m on the player. And what about their return?
Appeared 83 times. 12 goals. 6 assists. Nine of those goals came in the Premier League, and he started just 41 games for United.
Some players who are expected to be great never kick at all. It happens. But at 26, Sancho’s career is at a crossroads.
For those who have followed Sancho since he joined from Watford aged 14 and began to star in Manchester City’s youth teams, the five-year stagnation in Sancho’s career has been surprising. He showed his talent at City, and also at Borussia Dortmund, where he moved at the age of 17, becoming a true new force in European football.
In the summer of 2021, he won his 22nd cap for England in the European Championship final against Italy at Wembley. His next appearance was against Andorra in October of that year.
In the autumn of 2022, Sancho took a three-month break, which his manager at the time, Erik ten Hag, suggested was due to personal issues. Hopefully he can deal with those and the challenges that lie ahead.
Because it will take some challenge to regain his status as a truly elite player. It’s a shame that United didn’t decide to extend his contract for another year.
It wasn’t caused because they thought he would be useful to Michael Carrick, it was probably caused because they were trying to sell him. United clearly thought there was no buyer for Sancho. And they were probably right – certainly no one would pay him an eight-figure fee.
It must be remembered that Chelsea were willing to pay a penalty of £5 million to bring Sancho back to Old Trafford, where he scored five goals in 41 appearances on loan. Sancho showed glimpses of his undoubted ability during his season on loan at Aston Villa, but he only started nine Premier League games. Unai Emery has decided not to pursue a permanent transfer.
Carrick managed Sancho for three games in a short-term caretaker role following Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s departure. He said this about the player:
“When you watch him up close, technically he has very good ability. He has natural ability in and around the box, ball carrying, little plays, connections, creativity, the way he handles the ball.
“He’s always had it and he’s always done it, it’s part of football.
“But I’m not talking about Jadon individually in this case. It’s just the way it is and the way it should be. You can’t expect everything to go smoothly. It’s been proven that it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. We have to find a way to work through it.”
Sancho will find another club, probably in the Premier League. However, his time to fulfill his potential is running out.
