Arsenal are reportedly moving a step closer to signing Newcastle United star Bruno Guimarães. The Brazil international has been linked with a move from St James’s Park, with the Gunners said to be the frontrunners.

The 28-year-old’s contract with Newcastle runs until the summer of 2028 and there has been speculation for weeks that Arsenal could make a formal bid to bring Guimarães to the Emirates Stadium.

Midfield is an area of the squad that Arsenal are looking to add to this summer, and there has been a new update regarding the signing of Guimarães.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Arsenal are expected to make an offer in excess of £70m for Guimarães in the coming weeks.

According to reports, the Gunners are expected to hold further talks with Newcastle over the next few days to sign the Brazilian, with Arsenal believed to have already reached a personal agreement with the player.

It has also been stated that any decision on whether Guimarães becomes an Arsenal player will depend on Newcastle’s assessment of the player and whether they approve his departure.

The move follows reports emerging on social media that Arsenal have made a bid in excess of £80m to secure Guimarães.

However, ChronicleLive reports that no such offer has been made by Arsenal, and it has also become clear that the Gunners are unwilling to meet the £80m offer to sign Guimarães from Tyneside.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently spoke out about the growing speculation surrounding Guimarães’ future at the club, amid reports that he intends to leave St James’ Park this summer.

“I talked to him like I normally would,” Howe told ChronicleLive.

“Bruno is a great guy and we had some great conversations before, during and after the World Cup.

“What we talk about should remain private. He’s a great player and a great person.”

Howe added: “We don’t know what the future holds for Bruno, but that’s for others to speculate.

“But there are also conversations that I’m not a part of.”
