Liverpool faced Sunderland in a pre-season friendly on Saturday, but they played without Jeremy Jacquet as the summer signing was removed from the squad.
Jeremy Jaquet was left out of Liverpool’s squad at the weekend
Andoni Iraola was left out of Liverpool’s squad on Saturday due to Jeremy Jacquet’s long-term injury and admitted the Reds intended to “take it easy with him”.
The French defender was signed for £55m from Rennes in January but has been allowed to play the season with the Ligue 1 club. He then moved to Anfield, but that was the result of a long spell on the sidelines.
The 21-year-old was forced to miss the final months of last season due to a shoulder injury. His last game dates back to February 7th, given that he underwent surgery for the issue.
As a result, Liverpool have taken a cautious approach to bringing him back into the squad, and he was left out of the squad that beat Sunderland 4-2 in Nashville. “Jeremy and I decided to spend some time with him,” Iraola told LFCTV.
“He didn’t play for months with a shoulder injury, so I think we’ll take it easy with him. He’ll probably play in the last game of this U.S. tour and he’ll get some playing time. It’s true that we were a little bit happy, but now we’ve lost one.”
Iraola was referring to the injury sustained by Joe Gomez, who missed 10 minutes of Saturday’s game against Liverpool. A diagnosis of his injury has not yet been released, but the defender has been plagued by injuries for many years and could further test the depth of the team’s backline.
“Probably the worst news was that Joe was injured right away,” Iraola said. “We were happy because we continued training without losing a single player, but unfortunately for us we lost Joe right away.”

Liverpool will see Ibrahima Konate leave for Real Madrid at the end of his contract, while Giovanni Leoni is still working his way back to 100 per cent after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament last September. Virgil van Dijk has just turned 35 and his contract is due to expire in the summer.
Jacquet was highly rated and was linked with a move to Chelsea, who had been chasing him throughout January, but Liverpool made a hasty deal. Although he is relatively inexperienced, he will likely play a big role given Liverpool’s resources, which have already been tested in pre-season.
