Barcelona moved closer to a second successive La Liga title on Saturday with goals from Fermun Lupez and Marcus Rashford helping them win for the first time in six seasons against Getafe.
Fermun dedicated his 45th-minute opening goal to injured Barcelona’s top scorer and assist maker Lamine Yamal. He will miss the rest of the season with a muscular injury but hopes to be able to represent Spain at the World Cup.
After scoring, Fermun folded his arms and held his fingers up to form the “304” sign that Yamal uses to celebrate goals, a nod to the last three digits of the postal code of his hometown just north of Barcelona. Rashford came on as a substitute and scored a solo run in the 74th inning to seal a 2-0 victory.
11 points with 5 rounds remaining
With five matches remaining, including the Clasico held at the Camp Nou on May 10, Barcelona has widened its lead over second-place Real Madrid to an overwhelming 11 points.
Getafe’s physical, no-frills defense stymied Barcelona for six months at the Coliseum stadium. Barcelona have scored just once in their last five trips to the south of Madrid, with four consecutive draws and one loss in 2020. Barcelona last won here in 2019.
Madrid drew 1-1 on Friday thanks to a stoppage-time goal from Real Betis, dealing another blow to a team that already had slim hopes of beating Barcelona. Madrid are targeting their first season without a major title since the arrival of Kylian Mbapp.
