Vincius Jr. turned boos into cheers at Santiago Bernab. The Brazilian, who was heavily criticized by Real Madrid fans, responded with a stunning goal in LaLiga’s crucial 2-1 win over Deportivo Arabs on Matchday 33.
From boos to brilliance: Vincius’ response
The atmosphere was tense after Real Madrid were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League against Bayern Munich. Vincius Junior and Kylian Mbapp were criticized for their performances in the second leg in Germany, which led to loud jeers from the crowd before and during the opening stages of the match.
But on the pitch, Real Madrid responded. Mbapp took the lead in the 30th minute with a long-range shot that deflected past a defender and beat Antonio Cibera. Early in the second half, Vincius Jr. cut the lead to two with a powerful shot from outside the box that landed perfectly in the bottom corner of the goal.
The most iconic moment came immediately after the goal. Vincius put his hands together in an apologetic gesture towards the fans and then kissed the Real Madrid badge, in a clear attempt to reconnect with Bernab’s followers.
Alavs got one goal back in the closing stages, but it wasn’t enough to change the result.
The only negative for Los Blancos was the injury to Del Milito. He was sent off before half-time with knee discomfort after hitting the ball against the crossbar.
The win moves Xabi Alonso’s Real Madrid to 73 points, moving them within six points of La Liga leaders Barcelona, who play Celta Vigo on Wednesday.
