Lionel Messi has broken numerous records over his 20-year career and could add another to his collection at Inter Miami.

Garzas’ captain not only scored seven goals in seven games this season, but thanks to his accomplishments on the field, he has been named Player of the Week 14 times since joining Major League Soccer, which is close to the record set by Landon Donovan.

Can Messi reach Donovan’s MLS record?

Lionel, who scored two more goals in a recent 3-2 win against the Colorado Rapids, also won the Week 8 Player of the Match award, taking his total to 14 honors.

As a result, Lionel is now five wins away from tying former Los Angeles Galaxy and San Jose Earthquakes star Landon Donovan’s historic record of 19 awards. Landon Donovan has won the award 19 times, but is Donovan’s record in jeopardy along with Messi?

Since joining MLS, the Argentine has won individual awards at an impressive pace, including two consecutive MVP titles, an unprecedented feat in the league.

This is the fourth time Leo has won the award in the past eight weeks of play, and considering there are still about 24-25 games left in the MLS season, everything points to Leo not only catching up to Donovan, but surpassing him.

The Argentine’s consistency, immediate impact and outstanding performances week in and week out have seen him score 57 goals and assist 37 in 60 games since joining Garzas, and he is on track to reach 100 goal contributions in less than 30 games. This feat was achieved by Sebastian Giovinco, the first player to take 95 games to reach that milestone.

Meanwhile, Guillermo Hoyos’ team continues their strong run in the Eastern Conference, currently in second place with 15 points, and will take on Real Salt Lake this Wednesday, April 22nd at 9:30pm ET at America First Field.

Upcoming Inter Miami matches:

Real Salt Lake vs. Inter Miami: Wednesday, April 22 at America First Field Inter Miami vs. New England Revolution: Saturday, April 25 at New Stadium Inter Miami vs. Orlando City FC: Saturday, May 2 at New Stadium Toronto FC vs. Inter Miami: Saturday, May 9 at BMO Field FC Cincinnati vs. Inter Miami: Wednesday, May 13 at TQL Stadium.
