Dominik Szoboszlai has indicated he sees a long-term future at Liverpool, but admitted contract talks have stalled behind closed doors. Representatives from Szoboszlai’s EM Sports agency have been in talks with Anfield bosses over a new contract in recent months, with the Hungarian captain currently tied to the club until 2028.
Liverpool are keen to secure the No. 8 on a long-term deal given the huge progress he has made during his almost three-year spell on Merseyside, but speaking after Sunday’s 2-1 win over Everton, Szoboszlai admitted they were still far from agreeing a deal.
“As I said (a few weeks ago), there has been no real progress,” Szoboszlai said. “So I can’t say anything new about my contract situation. I still have a lot of games left so I’m focused on that.”
“As you guys may know, my contract ends in 2028, so I’m ready to go every day, every week, and then we’ll see.
“Obviously I think I’m here in the long term, but like I said, it’s not in my hands anymore.
“Like I’ve said many times, I love being here. I love the fans and I really love being here. My family is happy. Let’s see.”
“I’m completely relaxed. There are five games left. After that I’ll rest. After the international break, it’s an important game. Then we’ll see.”
“The support of the fans, it means a lot. Every time they chant my name, it means a lot. I think we were able to clarify what happened against Manchester City at the Etihad.”

Szoboszlai provided the assist for Virgil van Dijk for the winner at the Hill Dickinson Stadium as his 100th-minute goal gave Liverpool victory in the first-ever Merseyside derby at Everton’s new home.
Mohamed Salah’s opening goal was canceled out by Beto before Van Dijk headed home from Szoboszlai’s corner kick. The Reds midfielder was thrilled to score his first double against the Blues since 2022.

He added: “It felt great. We had quite a few corners and chances, just like they did. But to win a derby like this in the last second, you couldn’t have asked for more.”
“We were both happy to get the three points, but also happy for the fans because we know what it means to them and winning the derby means a lot to us as well.
“It’s been a long time[since we won a derby away in 2021]. Also, last season we didn’t manage to win away, but this season we did.
“I’d rather win like this than 3-0!
“It’s more fun to watch this way, and I think it’s also true for the fans of both teams. Maybe they were unlucky in the end, but I’m glad we got the three points.”
The win leaves Liverpool in fifth place in the race for a spot in the Champions League final, seven points behind Chelsea, with the two teams set to meet at Anfield next month.
“Winning always changes the atmosphere, but we have to stay on the floor and continue to work hard every day,” Szoboszlai said.
“We have to keep fighting to qualify for the Champions League and it’s going to be a tough game.
“It’s always difficult when you play against teams that are close to you, like Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. You always have to be ready and fight for them.
“I think[Arne Slott]is right that Liverpool have a bright future. We’ve brought in new players, young, talented players.
“We know what they can do and that they can help the team. That’s why they’re here. I’m really looking forward to playing with them in the next five games, obviously, and hopefully in the future as well.”
