Colombian star James Rodriguez made his first start for Minnesota United in the US Open Cup, but after 66 minutes, his performance raised more questions than answers and was still far from his best version.

‘Number 10’ returned after his last FIFA international match against the Colombian national team after overcoming health issues. He made his starting debut with his new club in a different line-up in a cup game that rotated the team.

The match against Sacramento Republic in the round of 16 ended 0-0 in regulation time and was decided to be a penalty shootout, with Minnesota winning 9-8 in the close penalty shootout.

Even positioned as a false ‘9’, James was unable to make a difference in the attack. Although he recorded a passing score of 84%, his overall impact was limited and he failed to convince fans and analysts.

Harsh criticism of James Rodriguez grows

Criticism quickly spread, especially among supporters of the Colombian national team, with concerns about his level growing ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Reactions on social media were blunt, with some claiming he was “done physically and athletically” and others saying he was “far from his best level”.

“It’s good that he’s getting playing time, but if he doesn’t get on the pitch, James, who played at the World Cup in Brazil, will never be back,” summed up the mood. Some questioned his place in the future World Cup squad.

Beyond the numbers, the important point is clear. James Rodriguez still has a lot to prove. Meanwhile, Minnesota United’s focus now shifts to their next MLS match against Portland Timbers, with the Colombian looking to regain his rhythm and rediscover his top form.
