○On Tuesday, April 14, Inter Miami surprised the soccer world by announcing the resignation of coach Javier Mascherano on their official social media accounts. Coach Mascherano has voluntarily resigned from his position along with the coaching staff who took office in January 2025.
Meanwhile, the position of “Mache” will be temporarily filled by Guillermo Hoyos, while head of football operations Alberto Marrero will take over the role of sporting director vacated by Hoyos.
Who is Angel Guillermo Hoyos?
Since arriving at Inter Miami, Hoyos has played a key role within the organization. He is responsible for overseeing and promoting the club’s professional development and his comprehensive knowledge of the sport has established him as a key player in the project.
For this reason, Guillermo will draw on his extensive football career to become the head coach of the first team in the upcoming games.
The former soccer player has more than 20 years of experience on the field, and off the field he has served as a coach and sporting director, making his mark in several countries including Argentina, Mexico, Chile, Greece and Cyprus. He also tried his hand at coaching the Bolivian national team and coached prestigious clubs such as Universidad in Chile and Atlas in Mexico.
One of the highlights of his career was his strong commitment to the development of young talent, which led him to Barcelona, where he worked in player development and was also present during Lionel Messi’s early years, building a relationship that lasts to this day.
The 38-year-old world legend acknowledged Hoyos as his “father of football”, saying: “From the moment I arrived at Barça he helped me a lot. He was always there… He taught me a lot and helped me get to where I am today,” said Leo.
With this new leadership role, Inter Miami is counting on experience, close connections with star players and a developmental vision that could shape the direction of the club in the short term.
On the other hand, manager Mascherano voluntarily retired after appearing in a total of 67 games and posting a record of 38 wins, 15 draws, and 14 losses.
