Manchester United midfielder Casemiro is set to leave the Red Devils this summer, but that promise could be about to materialize in three years’ time. The Real Madrid icon is said to have sent a message to his agent vowing to resolve the difficulties following the humiliating defeat against Erik ten Hag’s Brentford in 2023.
United are on the brink of securing a place in next year’s Champions League as he prepares to leave Old Trafford when his contract expires at the end of the season. After a difficult period at the Theater of Dreams, Casemiro’s return to United came at the perfect moment, with some key performances to keep their European ambitions alive.
In 2023, the Telegraph claimed that United’s disappointing opening game, defeats to Brighton and Brentford, led to the five-time Champions League winner deciding to move from Madrid to Manchester.
After a heartbreaking 4-0 loss at the hands of the Bees, the then 30-year-old reportedly texted his agent: “Please tell him I’ll fix this.”
Casemiro’s four-year contract at the North West has not been smooth sailing, with him facing intense criticism from the likes of Jamie Carragher and Gary Neville.
The former Liverpool defender was particularly scathing in his assessment of the Brazilian’s tenure at Old Trafford, calling for Casemiro to quit the Premier League. However, this season’s impressive feats have forced Carragher to swallow his words and admit that the midfielder has proven him wrong.
His career-best number of goals in all competitions this season is seven, all of which have come in the Premier League this season, but he will bid farewell to United having finally achieved his goal of turning the club’s fortunes around.
Confirming his departure, the player said: “I will carry Manchester United for the rest of my life. From the first day I left this beautiful stadium, I felt the passion of Old Trafford and the love that the supporters share for this special club.”
“Now is not the time to say goodbye, we have many more memories to make over the next four months.
“We still have a lot of work to do together and, as always, I remain fully focused on doing everything I can to help the club succeed.”
During a recent Q&A with the club, he added: “The love they have for the club is what I’ll miss the most. Of course it’s the club, but the fans are very connected to the club, regardless of the result.”
“In the next game they will be supporting the players and the club and that is what I will miss the most.”
