But those who watched the report on American channel FOX chuckled at commentator John Strong’s comments. At the start of the match, the experienced anchor casually said, “Ghana have never beaten England. That would be a big shock, but as we know, England have historically struggled here in Massachusetts.” This comment may have gone over some people’s heads, but it quickly caught the attention of American viewers and many of X’s viewers.
Mr. Strong was referring to the War of Independence with Britain, which lost important battles in the region. These include the Battles of Lexington and Concord, the Siege of Boston, and the Battle of Bunker Hill.
It’s a joke that resonated with American audiences, with one fan writing, “What a great, casual line,” while another added, “Amazing. And so many people have forgotten.”
A third fan responded to the clip, saying: “Just a savage.” Another said: “Give this commentator a raise.”
Strong’s claims were ultimately proven correct, as England actually struggled in Massachusetts. They were unable to break down the Ghana team, which showed great defense throughout the match.
It was a stark contrast to England’s goal-heavy start to the season, when they beat Croatia 4-2 in the opening game. After the draw with Ghana, Tuchel appealed for calm: “We don’t need any alarm bells. We’re all alert, we’re all working hard. There’s no doubt about it.”
“I can tell everyone else that there was no overconfidence in our game. Not at all. If there was, we were probably a little too cautious in some moments.”
“That is the reality. But we have four points from two games and there are still games left. And we were able to win the last game and of course we will strive for a win.”
“It’s very important that the highs aren’t too high and the lows aren’t too low. And today there are no lows, it’s just a difficult game.”
