Injury relief for Lionel Messi arrives, Argentina receives unexpected boost before 2026 World Cup

WWith less than two months until the 2026 World Cup, the world of football is gearing up for the biggest tournament in history. The field of 48 teams has been expanded, and the conversation around who will win is at a fever pitch. European powerhouses such as Spain, France and England are currently the favorites to lift the trophy in New Jersey, while South American powerhouse Brazil and reigning champion Argentina remain firmly in the top five.

But everyone’s attention is on the story of “The Last Dance.” Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo will both make history by appearing in a record-breaking sixth World Cup. For Argentina, having Messi on the pitch changes the importance of the match. Two Golden Ball wins and two final appearances in the past three competitions prove that the Albiceleste will never be out of contention as long as the GOAT remains healthy.

Argentina’s scary defense: Cristian “Cuti” Romero’s injury timeline and expectations for the World Cup

Everyone held their breath in Argentina’s camp this week after Cristian Romero suffered a serious injury. During the match between Tottenham and Sunderland, the attacking centre-back was forced off with a knee injury and the Premier League season was officially over. For a moment, it looked as if Lionel Scaloni would have to defend his world title without a defensive anchor, sending shockwaves through the national team.

However, the latest report from ESPN Argentina’s Martín Arevalo gives a big boost to “injury mitigation.” Romero faces a five-to-eight week recovery period and with more than 50 days until the opening whistle, it is questionable whether he will be able to return in time for the tournament. The injury itself is reportedly easy to treat, but the real hurdle will be match fitness.

Spurs’ season ends on May 24th, meaning Kuti will miss significant game time. Manchester United’s Lisandro Martínez remains a world-class insurance policy, but the partnership between Romero and Nicolas Otamendi has become the basis for victory in 2022. Scaloni will closely monitor Romero’s rehabilitation, as his “enforcer” presence is essential to maintaining defensive stability from the jump.

Scaloni’s strategy: Managing Group A and match rhythm

In theory, Argentina should have had a relatively smooth run through the group stage, facing Algeria, Austria and Jordan. While some may characterize this as an “easy” draw, the absence of a fully fit Romero could complicate things. If Romero isn’t 100% by the first game, Scaloni may elect to rotate his backline early to ensure his star defender is at his peak for the knockout rounds.

The key for Argentina will be to gain momentum without straining the recovering members. If Romero’s knee doesn’t respond to the increased stress as expected, Messi’s leadership will be paramount no matter who fills that defensive spot.
