Brazil’s biggest selection dilemma ahead of the 2026 World Cup continues to gain momentum, but even those closest to the situation are providing little clarity.
??
The debate over Neymar’s place in the team has only intensified since he was left out of the latest international matches, and Hulk’s recent comments have done little to resolve it.
After Atlético Mineiro lost 1-0 to Santos in Brasileirão, Fucu was asked directly whether Neymar should be included in Brazil’s plans for the next tournament. His answer, while cautious, spoke volumes, not an endorsement.
When asked about the topic, Hulk said, “I’m sorry, but I was focused on the match.” “I’m not the one who decides who goes to the World Cup. If he deserves it, he will go.”
Viewed in isolation, Hulk’s comments may seem neutral. However, given Brazil’s current uncertainties, the lack of support is striking.
Neymar remains his country’s all-time top scorer, but his place in the team is no longer guaranteed. This would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.
The 32-year-old has not featured for Brazil since sustaining a serious knee injury in October 2023. Although he has returned to club football with Santos, there are still concerns about his stability and fitness.
That uncertainty has forced manager Carlo Ancelotti to make difficult decisions. The Italian player has kept doors open for him time and time again, but he has also made it clear that reputation alone is not enough.
“He’s a great talent and it’s natural for people to think he can help us win the next World Cup,” Ancelotti told L’Equipe. “He still has two months to prove he has what it takes to play in the next World Cup.”
Neymar’s race against time
Neymar has a tough schedule. As the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches, every performance carries more weight.
His absence from recent friendlies against France and Croatia highlighted Brazil’s willingness to look beyond the established names, even if their fans made their feelings clear by cheering for him during the defeat to France in Boston.
However, Ancelotti dismissed the controversy and insisted the focus must remain on the players currently in the squad.
However, the manager acknowledged Neymar’s progress since returning from injury. “Neymar has made a great comeback after his knee injury and is scoring goals,” he said. “He needs to keep going in this direction and improve his fitness. He’s on the right path.”
The dilemma of choice grows
Brazil are in Group C alongside Morocco, Haiti and Scotland, giving them a favorable path on paper, but the composition of the team is yet to be finalized. Neymar’s experience could be invaluable, but there are obvious risks in selecting him given his lackluster game.
Hulk’s reluctance to speak out publicly may reflect the sensitivity of the decision, or simply the reality that there is no clear consensus within Brazilian football.
The challenge for Ancelotti is to balance loyalty and form, legacy and preparation. There’s no doubting Neymar’s talent, but as the countdown to the World Cup continues, the conversation is shifting from what he’s achieved so far to what he still can do.
