Marcelo Vieira is one of the most successful footballers in Real Madrid’s history, winning 25 titles with the club, including five Champions League titles. However, the left-back also played for the Brazilian national team and won the Confederations Cup, but the World Cup was always his biggest dream and was a thorn that he could not get rid of before putting on his cleats.
He officially retired from professional soccer a little more than a year ago, on February 6, 2025, at the age of 36. But recently he sparked a debate by revealing whether he would trade his five Champions League titles for the World Cup in Verde Amarella.
Marcelo: Five Champions Leagues or one World Cup?
In an interview on the YouTube channel of former Brazilian footballer and 1994 World Cup hero Romulio, the former Fluminense player was asked about a hypothetical situation and put to the test.
“Would you trade five Champions League wins with Real Madrid for a World Cup with the Brazilian national team?” Romulio asked him.
Marcelo thought for a moment about his decision and answer before confessing:
That’s a difficult question. To be honest…I would like to exchange it.
Marcelo made his debut for Real Madrid on 7 January 2007 against Deportivo in Riazor, and during his years in the white jersey he amassed an impressive list of accomplishments with Los Merengues, including five Champions League titles, four Club World Cups, three UEFA Super Cups, six La Liga titles, two Copa del Rey titles and five Spanish Super Cup titles. He played 546 games in all competitions for the club, becoming the second most capped foreign player after Benzema, and scoring 38 goals.
However, the truth is that Marcelo was unable to achieve the same success in his quest to win a new title with Canarinha, experiencing one of the most difficult periods in the recent history of the national team. However, there was one match that left an indelible mark on him.
He played in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups. In his debut, he played in six matches and reached the semi-finals against Germany, but that match ended in a historic 7-1 defeat and his dreams of winning another World Cup title were dashed. “I felt the effects of Neymar’s injury. They were very well organized and played great. It was like a nightmare that I wanted to wake up from,” Marcelo said of the worst episode of his career.
His second World Cup appearance was in Russia 2018, where he appeared in just four games before Brazil were eliminated in the quarter-finals.
Now, ahead of the new edition of soccer’s biggest tournament, Marcelo has revealed his favorites to win in the US, Mexico and Canada, saying: “In no particular order… Brazil, Spain, France, Argentina.”
