HEnthusiastic Real Madrid fans were heard chanting racist slogans outside the Santiago Bernabé before arriving for the match against Bayern Munich. While there is widespread rejection of these chants, there is also an unpleasant and somewhat absurd reality. In doing so, some fans were effectively targeting their team, its players, and even the club’s main sponsor.
The chant, which contained religious references and quickly sparked controversy, could be heard throughout the stadium in the lead-up to the match. One phrase that caught particular attention was “If you don’t jump, you’re a Muslim.”
The problem is not just the content of the statement.
Further complicating the situation, Real Madrid currently has players who practice Islam or have religious and cultural ties. Names such as Antonio Diger, Brahim Daz, Arda Gleir and Ferland Mendy are in the diverse squad.
That’s why the chants you hear from some Real Madrid supporters seem contradictory. Over the years, the club has had players of Arab and Muslim backgrounds, such as Karim Benzema and Mesut Gil, who not only stood out for their talent but also represented different cultures within the dressing room.
Historically, Real Madrid has been a gathering place for players from all over the world, and its diversity has been part of its identity as well as its title.
On the field, Bayern won 2-1 against Bernab and will head into the second leg in Germany with a draw. But beyond the scoreline, what happened before kickoff sparked a different kind of conversation. Because soccer is not only played on the pitch, it is also shaped by the streets, the stands and everything that surrounds the game.
