BArcelona’s recent match against Atlético Madrid was talked about not only by the Catalans’ 1-2 win, but also by Lamine Yamal’s visible anger at the time of his substitution and the support he received from his coach.
Far from criticizing his attitude, manager Hansi Flick was firm and protective of the 18-year-old winger, describing him as an “emotional” player.
Flick defends Ramin
Barcelona’s manager spoke to the press on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League game against Atlótico Madrid. During the press conference, he was asked about Yamal’s anger towards Jos Ramun de la Fuente at the Metropolitano. There he showed signs of dissatisfaction on the field and walked away frustrated, in a situation characterized by refereeing decisions, on-field actions and heightened tensions.
However, Flick focused on the player’s potential, which he considers to be a key player for Rose’s present and future, while pointing out that he is still only 18 years old and will always defend him, even if he makes a mistake.
“What we have to remember is that Lamine is 18 years old. He’s an unbelievable player. Sometimes when you see what he does, especially in one-on-one situations, it’s amazing. But he’s still 18 years old,” Flick said.
“Sometimes he gets angry when I substitute him, probably because he dribbles past four or five defenders and tries to take a shot. He can be frustrated. He’s emotional, but that’s okay. We’re supporting him. We’re helping him develop. We have to take care of him,” added the manager. “I know everyone is paying attention to him because he is great, but he is only 18 years old and everyone makes mistakes. We will always protect him. He will be the best in the future,” the manager stressed, making it clear that the club must support developing talent even in moments of frustration.
Flick’s support comes ahead of an important match. Barcelona and Atltico Madrid will face off in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals on April 8th at the Spotify Camp Nou.
However, the coach drew a clear line from the previous match, saying, “The Champions League is a different tournament. That’s how I think. It’s a tough opponent with great players. We want to advance to the next round.”
Meanwhile, Flick’s Vara, after the game against Cholo Simeone’s side, secured this important milestone for his team as they scored 301 goals in 107 games under the German manager, with Marcus Rashford scoring his 301st goal and Robert Lewandowski scoring his 301st.
Luiz (59 goals in 88 games), Rafinha (53 goals in 87 games) and Lamine Yamal (39 goals in 94 games) established themselves as the top scorers of the Hansi Flick era. Will he shine again against Atlético Madrid?
