As part of its new edition of “Made in Argentina,” Netflix opened an office in the country on Tuesday, April 7, and announced content planned for 2026 and 2027.
So, the streaming platform revealed that the Aston Villa goalkeeper will be producing his own film, which is expected to be released this year, although it did not give an exact release date.
Directed by Gustavo Coba and written by Hern Casciari, the film is a unique look at Emiliano Marnez’s life from his childhood to his move to Europe and his subsequent rise to fame with the Argentina national team. The film debuted in 2021 and featured important performances in the 2021 and 2024 Copa Amrica, the 2022 Finalissima, and the 2022 World Cup. In Qatar, he stood out with his decisive saves and leadership within the team and became the champion.
Netflix aims to create a story that transcends the realm of sports, through a young boy who discovers that he has the power to stop time, and who, by talking to a soccer ball, is reminded of all the challenges that lie ahead.
To that end, the film combines illustrations by renowned Argentine cartoonist Ricardo Siri (commonly known as Riniere), archival footage, and interviews with his friends, family, and teammates to provide an insider’s perspective on how his soccer career took shape.
Additionally, the film will be executive produced by Sergio Ferraro and Alejandro Greco, show-run by Andres Emilio, and produced by Pegusa, establishing it as one of the platform’s major investments in Argentinian content.
The first and only image shared by Netflix on its official Instagram account shows Dib in a green national team uniform and an illustration of his number 23, also dressed as a goalkeeper.
“This news is worth shouting like a save. Written by Hern Casciali, illustrated by Riniere, and directed by Gustavo Cova, ‘Divu Martones: The Child Who Stops Time’ is a film that combines never-before-seen testimonies and animation that follows the story of a boy who dreams of scoring and ultimately becomes one of the biggest heroes of the Argentina national team,” the streaming platform said.
This announcement made soccer fans very happy, with enthusiastic comments such as “The best goalkeeper in the world,” “A jewel,” “My goalkeeper, my 23-year-old, my hero, my pride,” and “Let’s do our best.”
With this film, Netflix not only celebrates the Argentine soccer icon, but also tells a story that inspires a new generation to pursue their dreams with passion, discipline and courage.
