F1’s star driver Max Verstappen has once again embraced the greatness of Lionel Messi, recalling the iconic assist the Argentina captain gave to Nahuel Molina in the 2022 World Cup quarter-finals against the Netherlands.
For the Red Bull Racing driver, what Messi does on the pitch is simply indefensible. Verstappen analyzed the play with deep admiration, highlighting the Argentine’s unique vision and decision-making in moments of pressure.
Verstappen praises Messi
“He knows how to read the game,” Verstappen said. “There are a lot of guys who need to run and create space to score, and he doesn’t do that.”
The Dutch driver praised: “He can score at any time and from anywhere. You might think you can stop him, but you can’t. He always finds an opportunity.”
“It’s impossible to defend that” has become one of the most powerful words when describing Messi’s greatness.
An unforgettable match between Argentina and the Netherlands ended 2-2 in a dramatic penalty shootout. There, Emiliano Marnes once again emerged as a hero and Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina reached the semi-finals.
Since then, the Argentina-Netherlands match-up has established itself as a true World Cup classic, with iconic battles lasting from 1974 to 2022, many of which were decided in crucial knockout stages.
This is not the first time Verstappen has praised Messi. Back in 2022, when comparing himself to Cristiano Ronaldo, he clarified his position by saying, “Messi is more talented.”
However, Verstappen acknowledged the Portuguese legend’s dedication: “Cristiano works incredibly hard and is in incredible condition.”
