Did Ancelotti’s decision become easier? Neymar receives record suspension for sexist comments

Neymar appeared to be turning a corner on the football pitch, but a familiar off-field storm quickly changed the narrative surrounding his return.

The Santos forward played a key role in the 2026 Brasileirão match against Remo, assisting the opening goal and showing encouraging signs after recently returning from injury.

For a player fighting to get back into rhythm ahead of the World Cup, it was just the performance he needed to get back into the conversation.

But within minutes of the final whistle, the focus shifted away from the football. Dissatisfied with the referee’s decision and a late yellow card that ruled him out of the next match against Santos, Neymar criticized referee Savio Pereira Sampaio in his post-match comments.

“He’s the type of referee who likes to be the center of attention,” Neymar said, a term that has drawn widespread criticism in Brazil for its sexist connotations.

Reaction was swift, with fans and media condemning the words and calling for disciplinary action.

Under Brazilian soccer regulations, Neymar could be suspended for up to 12 games if his comments are deemed to have violated the rules of conduct.

His comeback is overshadowed at the worst possible time.

The timing could not be more damaging for Neymar. The 34-year-old is working his way back to full fitness after months of limited action as competition for a spot in Brazil’s squad intensifies with the 2026 World Cup just around the corner.

His recent absence from international selection only adds to the pressure. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that consistent playing time and sharpness of game will be important in deciding the final squad.

Against Remo, Neymar seemed to be rebuilding his game. His assists and overall influence highlight how much Santos has benefited from his presence, with the team’s attacks becoming noticeably more creative and dangerous when he is on the pitch.

But instead of gaining momentum, the controversy now threatens to hinder his progress once again.

Outage risk raises new questions

Even before the possibility of a suspension is confirmed, Neymar will miss Santos’ next game against Flamengo due to his accumulated card.

A longer suspension could significantly reduce Ancelotti’s chances to prove his fitness and form before confirming his World Cup squad.

Although the domestic suspension will not prevent Neymar from representing Brazil, the lack of game time could be a deciding factor. As the national team announcement approaches, every performance carries weight.

Despite the uncertainty, support for Neymar’s arrival remains. Brazilian tennis star João Fonseca recently told ESPN Brasil that he believes Neymar should be part of the World Cup squad and that his “career and experience” are valuable assets.

Still, the picture is becoming increasingly complex. There is no doubting Neymar’s talent, but his discipline and consistency off the pitch may prove to be just as important as his contribution on it as he challenges himself to another major international tournament.
