GTuesday was supposed to be a celebration for the reigning European champions, even though this is their last international break before preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup begin. Spain hosted Egypt at the RCDE Stadium and they exchanged blows in a 0-0 draw as the home fans ejected the team ahead of a major tournament.
Apart from Spain’s somewhat disappointing scoreline, a disconcerting situation arose during the match that left Lamine Yamal emotionally distraught and wanting to leave the pitch without celebrating with the fans in the stadium.
During the match, anti-Islamic chants echoed through the crowd, shocking the soccer world. Yamal, a Muslim with Moroccan roots, was hurt by the situation. He was seen on video leaving the pitch relatively quickly after the final whistle, with a somber expression on his face.
Lamine Yamal condemns anti-Islamic chants during Spain vs. Egypt match
Yamal issued a statement after the game, waxing eloquent about the situation he witnessed and how the sport should be welcoming rather than divisive.
I am a Muslim, Alhamdulillah. Yesterday, chants “If you don’t jump, you’re a Muslim” were heard on the stadium TVs. I understand that this is directed at the opposing team, but as a Muslim, it is still disrespectful and cannot be tolerated. I understand that not all supporters are like that, but for those who advocate things like: Using religion as a means to mock others in the stadium is ignorant and racist. Football is meant to be enjoyed and supported, not disrespected for who others are or what they believe. That being said, thank you to all the fans who came out to support us. See you at the World Cup.
All this happened at a time of tense political situation in the country. Spain’s decision to legalize 500,000 illegal immigrants is polarizing to say the least. Most of these immigrants come from Morocco and other countries in North Africa, and Spain has a growing minority. Politics seems to be spilling over into soccer in this country right now.
