WWhat started as a football party for veterans at the Wild Stadium ended in a major setback for one of Argentine football’s biggest idols. During the much-anticipated match between Independiente and River Plate in the +35 Senior League Cup, Sergio “Kun” Aguero set off alarm bells when he sustained a heavy blow to his left ankle and was forced to leave the field.
Kun Aguero seriously injured
Despite Independiente winning 2-0 with goals from De Vincenti and Bordagaray, the mood was dampened as the former Manchester City striker was seen being helped to the dressing room by his team-mates.
A few hours later, after the team captain underwent a medical check, the uncertainty turned into a discouraging fact.
“I underwent an MRI scan and it was confirmed that I had ruptured a tendon. Tomorrow I will start the tests and undergo surgery,” Aguero said, confirming that he will undergo surgery within the next few hours.
Kun Aguero’s new physical problem
The injury means a sudden setback for Aguero in 2026. He was very active that year and contributed to Independiente’s senior category.
After scoring against Riestra last week, the striker expressed his delight at wearing the shirt of his beloved club again. “I want to keep getting more games because I’m going to be here,” he said a few days before the misfortune.
Aguero’s absence will be a blow to Avellaneda’s team plans, leaving him without a key player indefinitely. The focus now shifts to the rehabilitation process, a path Aguero is already familiar with, but this time he will face it from the post-professional stage.
