THis countdown is officially in final gear. Next Tuesday, March 31st, the world will finally know the final six teams that will punch their ticket to the 48-team grid for the 2026 World Cup. From that point, there will be just over two months until the historic opening whistle blows at the renovated Estadio Azteca, where Mexico will host South Africa.
This is the first monster tournament with 48 countries participating, which means more matches, more travel and a grueling road to the finals in New Jersey on July 19th. There are talented players scattered across each continent, players who will carry the weight of their nations. Whether it’s pure clinical finishes, global popularity or veteran leadership, these eight stars will determine the story of the tournament.
Lionel Messi (Argentina): The reigning world champion will make history with his record-breaking sixth World Cup appearance. The Albiceleste’s central player will be taking part in this tournament at the age of 38, currently playing for Inter Miami. He has scored 13 goals in his last five World Cup appearances and will be aiming to defend his Group J crown. Cristiano Ronaldo (Portugal): The fan favorite is playing in his sixth World Cup, the most of any player, along with Messi. Even at the age of 41, the Al Nasr striker still has an impressive physique. He has eight goals in total at the World Cup and will lead Portugal’s stacked squad through Group K. Kylian Mbapp (France): The heir apparent is pursuing a feat achieved only by Brazil and Germany: reaching the final of three World Cups in a row. The 27-year-old Real Madrid superstar has already scored 12 World Cup goals in just two competitions, making him the clear favorite to win the Golden Boot from Group I. Lamine Yamal (Spain): At just 18 years old, Barcelona’s wonder boy makes his World Cup debut. After leading Spain to Euro victory two years ago, he entered Group H as the face of a new Spanish dynasty. It’s his first tournament, but expectations are already at Golden Ball level Vincius Jr. (Brazil): Vinci carries the burden of being the mainstay of the most successful country in history. Thousands of Brazilian fans will be cheering him on in Group C across the US as the 25-year-old Real Madrid leader looks to add his only World Cup goal from 2022. Harry Kane (England): Probably the most consistent finisher in the world today. The 32-year-old Bayern Munich striker has scored eight goals at the World Cup and will be in Group L with England, who many believe is finally ‘ready’ to take home. Christian Pulisic (USA): If the hosts advance in Group D, it’s ‘Captain America’. Pulisic is having the best season of his career with AC Milan and, at 27 years old, is in his prime to lead the USMNT further than they have in decades. Erling Haaland (Norway): “The Robot” has finally arrived on the world stage in his first World Cup. Haaland is the fastest player to reach 50 international goals (he did so in just 46 games). I haven’t seen this kind of excitement over his debut since his nine-goal performance at the 2019 U-20 World Cup. He enters Group I as the ultimate wildcard.
The sheer number of games in this new format means that stars alone are not enough. Health and team rotation are the hidden keys to the trophy.
While the above names grab the headlines, the tournament’s “value-add” comes from the veterans and elite midfielders who control the tempo. Keep an eye on Luka Modric, who continues to excel despite his age with the Croatian national team, and Jude Bellingham, who many expect to be England’s true driving force.
