Mauricio Pochettino’s statement after the USMNT’s disaster in Belgium speaks volumes

After the U.S. men’s national team lost 5-2 to Belgium, coach Mauricio Pochettino was cautious, calling the result “hurt” but insisting the performance provided valuable lessons for a tougher test.

The loss in Atlanta ended the USMNT’s winning streak at three. A strong first half was broken by Belgium’s decisive momentum, resulting in three goals in the 15 minutes after half-time.

Weston McKennie took the lead for the United States, and Patrick Agyeman added another goal late on, but defensive mistakes and a lack of intensity allowed Belgium to take the lead.

In his post-match press conference, Pochettino stressed that the final result did not fully reflect the team’s performance, especially in the first 45 minutes.

Pochettino highlights positives despite scoreline

“It’s difficult and painful to accept, but at the same time there are so many things to look at positively,” Pochettino said.

The first half was really good. We played better than Belgium and created chances.

He emphasized the need to maintain intensity throughout the game to play against one of the world’s best national teams, noting that the United States matched Belgium’s tempo in overtime before losing momentum late in the first half.

Pochettino also downplayed widespread concerns about the long-term impact, saying the focus should be on analyzing matches and learning from them rather than drawing conclusions about future tournaments.

Pochettino acknowledged the positives, but admitted his team “weren’t aggressive enough”, especially defensively. The U.S. last line struggled to contain the pace of Belgium’s attack, and breakdowns in communication proved costly at crucial moments.

Urgency of improvement

Belgium exploited almost every mistake in defense, exposing problems in their organization and composure that had resurfaced after their recent strong performances.

The USMNT faces another major challenge against Portugal at the same venue and has limited time to adjust. Pochettino viewed the defeat as a potential learning opportunity, stressing that growth often comes from difficult results.

Whether this loss is a temporary setback or a warning sign, the coach has made his goals clear going forward. It was about absorbing lessons quickly and responding with more intensity when the next challenge came.
