What happened to the Mexico vs. Portugal match losing some of its charm?

TThe excitement of the Mexico-Portugal friendly didn’t disappear overnight, but it definitely changed. What once felt like a must-see event for many fans in Mexico now commands a different kind of attention, shaped as much by what’s missing as by what surrounds the match.

The first change was brought about by the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese forward was expected to be a key figure in the match and was the main reason why many fans were watching closely in the build-up. A right hamstring injury in February ruled him out of the trip, and the level of excitement surrounding the game quickly changed.

But the changes didn’t stop there

On March 26, just two days before kick-off, Ronaldo posted on social media the message: “Good to be back! Looking good” after continuing his recovery process in Madrid. The image didn’t show him returning to competition, but it was enough to show his progress.

But the timing prompted a different response. By that time, expectations regarding the match had already changed. His message didn’t bring him back to the field in Mexico, but it did remind fans of what the event originally promised and what it failed to deliver.

At the same time, other factors are starting to influence the match experience.

In Mexico City, authorities will implement movement restrictions around the stadium, allowing access only to residents with ID, emergency vehicles and authorized public transport. For fans, this will change how game day unfolds, from how they arrive to how they navigate the venue.

These measures are part of a broader operational framework set out by FIFA ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The idea behind it is to prevent thousands of vehicles from trying to reach the same area at the same time, potentially overwhelming city roads. By restricting vehicle access, authorities will be able to better control the flow of crowds while allowing emergency services and team transport to move through without delays.

The match is scheduled to take place on March 28th at the newly renovated Estadio Banorte, marking the beginning of a new chapter for one of the most iconic venues in the world of sport.
