Gattuso brings Italy closer to World Cup qualification for first time in 12 years: fans can’t believe it

TThe nerves in Bergamo were palpable as Italy were sent off to boos at half-time, putting their 2026 FIFA World Cup hopes in jeopardy. Sandro Tonali produced a decisive second-half performance to lead Italy to a 2-0 victory over Northern Ireland, moving Gennaro Gattuso’s side closer to qualifying for their first World Cup in 12 years.

The Azzurri entered the World Cup play-off semi-finals under pressure, having failed to qualify in the previous two tournaments.

Gattuso’s Italian team, playing at home in Bergamo, needed a result to keep their hopes alive.

The first half was largely uninspired. Italy struggled to create chances, much to the frustration of the home crowd. However, things changed after the break.

Real Madrid fans excited about Casemiro and Modric reunion

Tonali stepped up in the 56th minute. He was positioned just outside the box and fired a powerful half-volley through the defense to give Italy the lead.

This goal completely changed the game, with Tonali taking over as provider in the 80th minute. He set up Moise Kean, who finished calmly to double his advantage and secure the result.

Tonali’s full performance was as perfect as it was decisive. In 83 minutes, he had one goal, one assist, three chances created, six ball recoveries, as well as one defensive block and one clearance.

Italy hungry for World Cup soccer

For Italy, this was more than just a victory. Missing the World Cup for the second time in a row put a lot of pressure on the national team, making every playoff game feel like a final.

Tonali’s performance not only kept the campaign alive, but also highlighted a new leader emerging in the midfield.

The 25-year-old is in his prime and has shown the ability to influence games at both ends of the pitch.

The Newcastle star’s combination of technical quality, work rate and composure under pressure is exactly what Italy have been lacking in recent qualifying cycles.

Performances like this will be essential if Italy is to return to the world stage.

Fans were quick to notice Tonali’s influence, flooding social media with praise after the match.

“Thank you Sandro Tonali for saving this team,” one fan wrote on X.

“We have Tonali, he is our game-breaker,” said another player.

Still others called his performance a “masterclass” and questioned where he fits among the best midfielders in the world.

There were even transfer offers, with one fan linking him with Manchester United, with one fan describing him as a “certified big game player”.

The overall impression was clear. Tonali led the team when it mattered most.

Who will Italy play next?

Italy will advance to the play-off final and will face Bosnia and Herzegovina on Tuesday.

The Bosnian side drew 1-1 with Wales before winning 4-2 on penalties, with 40-year-old Edin Dzeko scoring the decisive equalizer.

Italy are just one game away from qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but they must not be satisfied with just that.

If Tonali can reproduce this level, Italy’s long-awaited return to the world stage could finally become a reality.
