Doubts grow about Colombia’s James Rodriguez: ‘He is far from ideal fitness’

TJames Rodriguez’s relationship with opinion journalism has been a roller coaster of praise and fierce criticism over the past decade. However, the recent defeat of the Colombian national team against Croatia (2-1) in a friendly ahead of the 2026 World Cup has not only raised alarm within Nestor Lorenzo’s coaching staff, but has also provoked new vitriol from one of the country’s most influential and controversial voices, Iván Mejía Álvarez.

Mejia’s diagnosis is ‘far from ideal’

True to his frank and unfiltered style, the experienced sports analyst took to his social networks and opinion channels to analyze what he believes to be an alarming performance by the Colombian No. 10. For Mejia, the problem with James is not talent, no one disputes that, but rather a physiological and competitive reality that seems to take its toll at the most inopportune moments.

Mejia said on his official X account (formerly Twitter): “James is far from in ideal physical condition to play in the World Cup. And time is running out…” The reporter highlighted that the midfielder showed an alarming lack of rhythm, poor dynamics and an inability to maintain the intensity required in today’s elite international football.

The shadow of Juan Fernando Quintero

One of the most heated points in Mejia’s criticism was his direct comparison to Juan Fernando Quintero, another member of the Golden Age. To journalists, the difference in pace between the two playmakers is now egregious, suggesting that meritocracy in the national team should take precedence over name hierarchy.

Mejia claims that while James has struggled to find solid physical footing after months of inconsistency at club level, other players have arrived with excellent “match fitness”. This observation calls into question Rodriguez’s undisputed starting role. Rodriguez remains the group’s captain and the mental lynchpin, but he could become a “burden” if he does not reach peak fitness within the next three months.

A friendly match that left more than doubts

The loss to Croatia in Orlando wasn’t just a mistake on the scoreboard. It was a scenario where you could see the seams of a team that relied too much on James’ inspiration. This time around, James was slow in transition and appeared to be out of step with the speed offered by wingers like Luis Diaz.

Criticism of Mejia is not isolated. This adds to some in the press and fans questioning whether the current Minnesota United roster (according to recent reports regarding their relationship with MLS) can withstand the demands of a short and extremely intense tournament like the World Cup, especially given the climate and travel in North America.

A wake-up call or a definitive declaration?

For many, Ivan Mejia’s words are a needed reality check. For others, this is another attack on a player who gave everything for his national team. But the core of the problem cannot be denied. For James Rodriguez to become Colombia’s playmaker at the World Cup, he will need quality minutes and special physical preparation.

As Mejia says, time is your greatest enemy. With less than 90 days until the World Cup, James is in a race against time. The next friendly against France will be an acid test. We’ll see if the number 10 can silence his critics with his football, or if Mejia’s verdict is instead a prophecy of the end of an era.
