David Beckham reacts to Trent Alexander-Arnold being left out of England squad

IIt felt like a slightly heavier team announcement than usual. Trent Alexander-Arnold was not included in England’s squad list for the March 2026 friendly, but that one decision is now quickly becoming the talk of the town.

Timing is important. England drew 1-1 with Uruguay (27 March) and are now preparing to face Japan on 31 March. These matches are not just about results, but ultimately about forming a team that will compete in the 2026 World Cup. And for now, Trent isn’t part of that immediate picture.

Thomas Tuchel did not shy away from the conversation. He called it a “sporting decision” and acknowledged it could feel harsh or even unfair. But he also made his reasoning clear. Players like Ben White and Tino Libramento have made strides in recent camps and their consistency is beginning to pay off.

Things have not gone well for Alexander-Arnold since his move to Real Madrid in the summer of 2025. His season was interrupted by an injury, and he only appeared in 21 games and provided just three assists. He has also missed 22 games, which will inevitably affect his rhythm and confidence both at club and international level.

This is a marked change from his time at Liverpool, when he was always involved in the game, leading the game and putting up numbers. Now, availability is part of the conversation, not just talent.

Beckham intervenes with a different view

David Beckham took a more sympathetic view in an interview with talkSPORT. He didn’t ignore the criticism Trent often receives, especially on the defensive end, but he framed it differently.

“I’m a big Trent fan… sometimes you have to accept what a player is going to bring,” Beckham said, referring to Roberto Carlos and reminding him that not all full-backs fit into the same mold.

He also made a subtle but important point. Tuchel said other players were in the lead “at the moment”. The wording is important. This suggests that this is not behind closed doors, but just a current snapshot.

Deeper team, tougher choices

According to a report from Sky Sports, Tuchel spoke directly to Alexander-Arnold and explained the situation. This type of communication provides clarity but also reflects change. England now have real depth in the position, with each option offering something slightly different.

During the match, the reaction was steady rather than explosive. Analysts see this as less of a disdain and more of a sign that competition within the team is really heating up. Not too long ago, Trent felt that way automatically. That’s no longer the case.

Development from here

England will continue to test combinations over the coming months as the path to the 2026 World Cup becomes clearer. For Alexander-Arnold, the focus is simpler, if not easier. Stay healthy, play regularly and make an impact again at Real Madrid.

There’s still time. But the margin for error is smaller now than in years past.
