TJoaquín Panicelli’s fairy-tale rise came to a cruel end just as the striker was on the verge of global superstardom.
The 23-year-old, who shocked the French soccer world this season by scoring 16 league goals with RC Strasbourg Alsace, was confirmed to have torn the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee during the final training session with the Argentina men’s national team.
The injury occurred during Albiceleste’s preparations for a scheduled friendly match against Mauritania in Prague on Thursday.

For Panichelli, the diagnosis is a haunting echo of his past. This is the second time the Curdovan-born forward has faced a cruciate ligament tear, having previously overcome a similar left foot injury while in Spain two years ago.
The fallout from the injury extends to the sport’s biggest stage. Panichelli has recently become a central figure in coach Lionel Scaloni’s plans for the 2026 Men’s World Cup, with many seeing the 190m striker as the ideal physical successor to the team’s aging forward line.
He made his international debut against Angola in November 2025 and was widely expected to secure a spot on the 26-man roster for the North American tournament. Instead, his dreams of defending Argentina’s world title this June have officially ended with medical staff’s diagnosis that recovery will take at least six months.
Strasbourg’s triple front crisis
The timing of the injury is particularly cruel considering Strasbourg’s upcoming schedule, which includes a Conference League quarter-final against Germany’s Mainz 05.
Without a key shooter, the responsibility of leading the front line is expected to fall on David Datolo Fofana, who is on loan from Chelsea.
Beyond the immediate tactical concerns, this injury has reignited discussions about the club’s long-term roster strategy under BlueCo ownership. Panichelli’s form has made him a top candidate for a summer move to Chelsea, but his move now faces significant delays as he undergoes an intense rehabilitation process.
