Iran threatens US boycott but continues preparations for World Cup amid uncertainty

Iran has vowed to boycott the United States as it prepares to participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with political tensions and contradictory public statements clouding the country’s participation in world soccer’s biggest tournament.

Iranian Football Federation President Mehdi Taj confirmed the national team’s preparations and reiterated his country’s hardline stance on one of the tournament’s co-hosts.

“We will boycott America, but we will not boycott the World Cup,” Taj said in a video published by Iran’s Fars news agency on Wednesday, according to Reuters.

The declaration comes in the wake of heightened geopolitical tensions following US and Israeli airstrikes on Iran in late February, sparking debate within the country over whether the national team should withdraw from the tournament altogether.

Iran has not submitted a formal notification of withdrawal to FIFA, and their World Cup qualification remains unresolved.

Conflicting political messages deepen uncertainty

Calls for a boycott intensified after Iranian Sports Minister Ahmad Donyamali said on March 11 that the national team could not participate in the World Cup “under any circumstances” following the death of Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Khamenei in an airstrike.

Taj has previously warned that Iran cannot be expected to go into the tournament “with high hopes”, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the team’s intentions.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has publicly questioned whether Iran’s participation is appropriate, citing security concerns.

Despite this rhetoric, Taj acknowledged that preparations continue to progress, with Iran currently holding a training camp in Turkiye and planning two international friendlies.

In the absence of formal action from Iran or FIFA, diplomacy has stalled, with one source describing it to the Guardian as a “brinkmanship”, as both sides appear to be trying to avoid responsibility for a potential withdrawal.

FIFA resists schedule changes as alternatives emerge

All three of Iran’s scheduled group stage matches are scheduled to be held in the United States, against New Zealand and Belgium at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, Calif., then against Egypt at Lumen Field in Seattle.

The United States, Canada and co-host Mexico have been floated as potential alternative venues. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo recently indicated that her country would be open to hosting the Iran games if necessary, and emphasized Mexico’s diplomatic relations with all countries.

However, FIFA has expressed no intention to change the tournament schedule and said it expects all teams that qualify to play according to the announced dates of December 6, 2025.

No party has taken decisive action, and uncertainty remains over Iran’s participation. If the teams ultimately qualify, political tensions could persist throughout the tournament, including the possibility of a high-stakes round of 32 against the United States in Dallas if both teams finish second in their respective groups.
