Barcelona’s 7-2 victory over Newcastle United in the Champions League round of 16 was not the only highlight of the match.

Lamine Yamal and his teammates created a goal-scoring spectacle, with the youngster playing a key role and celebrating the goal with a dance in true Neymar style, but they also took away an important record from Kylian Mbapp.

Mbapp loses major record to Yamal

In 2018, Kylian scored his 10th Champions League goal for PSG against Bayern Munich at the age of 18 years and 350 days, making him the competition’s all-time top scorer among players aged 19 and under, although he was unable to prevent a 3-1 defeat.

For eight years, the French forward could boast of being the youngest player to achieve this feat. Until Wednesday, March 18th.

Rose’s young star scored his team’s third goal of the game, converting a penalty in the 45+7 minute of the first half. Lamine thus snatched the record from Mbappu at the age of 18 years and 245 days, establishing himself as the youngest player to reach this milestone in the tournament.

He also became the third under-20 player in this selection group to reach this milestone, following Mbapp and Erling Haaland.

Despite this achievement, ‘Kiki’ is proud of having reached this milestone in fewer games than Lamine, requiring just 15 matches while Yamal had to play 31 to reach this figure.

Now in the quarter-finals and awaiting matches against Atltico Madrid on April 8th and 14th, Yamal has the chance to continue making history, with at least two games left to score his 11th goal in European competition. And the big question is no longer whether he will definitely surpass Mbapp, but how many more records he can break before he turns 19 on July 13, or his 20th birthday in 2027.

Meanwhile, Vara are preparing for their first LaLiga match against Rayo Vallecano on Sunday 22nd March at the Spotify Camp Nou. They will also face Diego Simeone’s side at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium in La Liga on April 4.
