FC Barcelona confirmed that they have a bright future ahead of them by defeating Newcastle United 7-2 (8-3 on aggregate) to advance to the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.
Two of the players who scored in the return match at Camp Nou were 18-year-olds Lamine Yamal (45 minutes + 7 seconds) and Marc Bernal (18 minutes), and Fermun Lupez, who is only 22 years old.
These are the players who formed Barcelona’s historic line-up, started in the Champions League knockout stages and set age records.
Barcelona’s promising future
According to Opta analysts, his average age of 25 years and 18 days makes him the youngest player in Barcelona’s history to start in a UEFA Champions League final.
In this same match, Lamine Yamal reached 10 goals in the Champions League at just 18 years old, becoming the youngest player to reach that mark and the youngest player to score in consecutive knockout matches in the competition.
To put it into perspective, only two other players have scored as teenagers in the Champions League: Kylian Mbapp (13 goals) and Erling Haaland (10 goals).
The big question now is whether Barcelona’s young generation can bring the Champions League title back to the club. They haven’t lifted the trophy since Lionel Messi and others won it in 2015.
