Gio Reyna has done little to earn a spot on Mauricio Pochettino’s final U.S. national team for the World Cup in his home country. His performances at club level have been underwhelming to say the least.
So far in 2026, the midfielder has logged just 26 minutes for Borussia Mönchengladbach. With such limited playing time, it’s hard to imagine him earning a spot on the U.S. team as the tournament approaches.
Reyna has been absent from the team for most of the past eight games. Notably, he was injured in five of those games and was not included in the starting lineup for the remaining three games, remaining on the bench.
Gio Reyna continues to attract Pochettino’s attention
Despite the circumstances, the 23-year-old put in some strong performances under Argentina coach Mauricio Pochettino in recent international friendlies. He scored a goal against Paraguay, resulting in a 2-1 victory over the South American team.
In his next game, he provided an assist in a 5-1 victory over Uruguay last November.
I think Gio was great when he was with us in November.
I think everyone praised his involvement and dedication to the team in the game against Paraguay and afterwards.
Pochettino spoke to reporters on Tuesday, March 17, after announcing his squad for friendlies against Belgium and Portugal.
Reyna is one of those players who doesn’t get many chances at club level, but when he breaks into the national team, he often puts in some memorable performances.
I think it’s good to look at players who haven’t played much, like in the case of Gio, before finalizing the final squad for the World Cup. “…”But he is a very talented player and we know how he can add to the national team.
Pochettino said.
The lack of consistent playing time in the Bundesliga has made it difficult for the midfielder to earn a place in the Bundesliga. He has accumulated just 1,600 minutes over the past three seasons.
And he can play with us. Again, I think we really know he’s a very special talent and a very special player. And I think he could be very useful to us, even if he doesn’t play much for the club.
Injuries are working against the young player and tactical considerations are not in his favor either. However, he remains one of the players under Mauricio Pochettino’s consideration, suggesting he may still have a genuine chance of breaking into this summer’s World Cup squad.
