How far can Norway and Erling Haaland go in the World Cup?

aAfter years of instability on the international stage, the Norwegian national football team enters the 2026 FIFA World Cup with renewed belief and the advantage of legitimate star power led by Erling Haaland.

Norway’s qualification campaign sent a clear message to other sectors. Haaland showed an overwhelming performance, scoring 16 goals in eight qualifying games, establishing himself as one of the most dangerous forwards heading into this tournament. His combination of size, speed and decision-making ability gives Norway a weapon few national teams can match, especially in high-pressure situations where one goal can decide a match.

Erling Haaland’s candid reaction to gift to Manchester City

But the bigger story is that Norway is no longer a one-player team. The emergence and growth of players like Martin Odegaard and Antonio Nusa transformed the team into a more balanced and dynamic unit. Odegaard provides control and creativity in midfield, dictating the tempo and providing chances, while Nusa adds speed and unpredictability on the wing.

Norway strengthened their team

This supporting cast has elevated Norway to what many analysts now see as a rejuvenated European team capable of competing beyond the group stage. The team’s offensive profile is especially dangerous in a tournament setting where efficient finishing and quick transitions can disrupt even the most organized defense.

The important thing is how far that attack power can go. Given their current form and depth, a breakthrough from the group stage seems a realistic expectation. With Haaland leading the back line and Odegaard commanding the midfield, Norway have the tools to consistently create scoring opportunities against a wide range of opponents.

Once you get into the knockout rounds, the margin for error is much smaller. Norway’s lack of recent deep tournament experience could be a factor here. Unlike traditional powerhouses, they have not always been able to overcome the pressure of losing games on the world stage. However, having a striker like Haaland could make up for that lack of experience to some extent. A player who can score at his pace can change the outcome of a game in an instant.

Unpredictability favors the Norwegian team

Another factor working in Norway’s favor is the element of unpredictability. They may not be under as much pressure as the established powers, as they have traditionally not been considered an elite contender team. This dynamic allows them to play more freely while their opponents carry the weight of expectations, especially early in the knockout rounds.

Defensively, Norway needs to prove they can compete against the most complete team in the tournament. Their attack can compete with anyone, but progressing deep into the World Cup typically requires balance at both ends of the pitch. If they can maintain their defensive structure and discipline, their chances of pulling off an upset greatly increase.

Realistically, Norway enters the tournament as a dark horse with the potential to reach the quarter-finals, and if they finish, they could even move beyond the quarter-finals. The presence of an elite goalscorer in top form and the growth of the supporting cast make them one of the teams to watch.
