MOrocco won the Africa Cup of Nations title in style on Tuesday, with an appeals panel overturning Senegal’s victory in January’s chaotic final.
The Confederation of African Football announced that its appeals committee had declared the final forfeited to Senegal, ruling that a 1-0 victory in extra time would result in a 3-0 bye for hosts Morocco.
In the final in Rabat on January 18, Senegal left the field in protest during the 15th minute of stoppage time, and fans tried to storm the field after Morocco were awarded a penalty.
When play resumed, Morocco forward Brahim Diaz’s penalty was saved and Senegal scored the only goal in extra time.
CAF fined the Senegalese and Moroccan players and officials more than $1 million and suspended them in an initial disciplinary hearing, but the results were left untouched.
The case could be further appealed at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.
