IMexico’s Laon embassy has sounded the alarm about possible changes to the already set schedule for the next World Cup to be held in the United States. Through a message on the social networks of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic in Mexico, it was claimed that the country is negotiating with FIFA to hold matches in Mexico. The association, chaired by Gianni Infantino, prefers to be cautious and has only said that its idea is to hold the competition as agreed.
“FIFA is in regular contact with all participating member associations, including the Iranian Football Federation, to discuss plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. FIFA expects all participating teams to compete according to the match schedule announced on December 6, 2025,” FIFA told MARCA.

The Mexican embassy’s explanation quotes a statement from the president of the Iranian Football Federation. “Iran Football Federation President Mehdi Taj: Now that President Trump has made it clear that he cannot guarantee the safety of the Iranian national team, we will never go to the United States. We are negotiating with FIFA for Iran’s World Cup matches to be held in Mexico,” the message on social media said.
“We reiterate that the United States is not cooperating with us regarding the issuance of visas. We are interested in participating in the World Cup, but the US government is not providing the necessary logistical and administrative support,” Psednide told the state-run IRNA news agency, as quoted by the embassy’s website.
President Trump, from invitation to persuasion
The situation with Iran at the US World Cup remains unclear and somewhat confusing. After his meeting with President Trump, Infantino commented that he welcomed Iran’s participation, despite the Iranian government’s announcement that it would not attend. The US president said he welcomed them, then advised them not to attend for their safety.Iran are in Group G and will make their debut against New Zealand on June 16 in Inglewood, California. All games will be moved as they will play Belgium at the same venue on the 21st and then play Egypt in Seattle on the 27th.
