TAs tensions continue to rise in the Middle East, soccer fans are looking forward to the blockbuster showdown between Argentina and Spain in the final. The match was originally scheduled to be held in Doha, Qatar, but circumstances have changed and opposition has emerged over the venue.
The ongoing dispute in the region has forced UEFA and CONMEBOL organizers to reconsider the set-up for the much-anticipated showdown between Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal, with one side insisting the match should be played at the Santiago Bernabé, Real Madrid’s home ground.
Argentina refuses to play in Real Madrid stadium
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) does not want the match to be held at the Santiago Bernab, and a new proposal has been floated to hold the match at River Plate’s Estadio Monumental. This idea was openly supported by AFA President Claudio “Chiqui” Tapia.
“We’re going to get to work because Spain wants the Finalissima to be held in Spain, and I want it to be held at Monumental,” Tapia said.
Just hours after those comments, AFA reported on social media that Tapia had met with CONMEBOL president Alejandro Domguez to discuss the venue for Argentina’s match against Spain.
In recent hours, the possibility of hosting the match at England’s Wembley Stadium was also assessed. However, so far no agreement has been reached to hold the Finalissima at a neutral venue.
Race against time to reach the finalisima
While fans wait for official confirmation, the real race against time has begun. Uncertainty has left the finalisima in limbo, with the match very likely even being called off, forcing both Argentina and Spain to arrange separate international friendlies instead.
The result would be a worst-case scenario for soccer fans who were looking forward to the final between Argentina and Spain, originally scheduled for March 27, and featuring stars such as Lionel Messi and Lamine Yamal.
